Interest of Sports Medicine
(late 1980 – early 1990)

Doctors in general looked after the injuries and illnesses in sports .
Groups of doctors and individuals interest in sports started casual talks
about sports medicine.
There was little evidence of some professional awareness programmes.

Team Physician Course – 1998

 

The designing of course contents and syllabus
of the FIMS Team Physician Course was held
in Sri Lanka and proposed local SLSMA
Faculty, was approved at the XXVIth World
Sports Medicine Congress in Orlando, Florida,
USA.
Sri Lanka was selected to conduct the 1st FIMS
Team Physician Course in Asia.
Nomination of Colombo to host the 6th Asian
Congress of Sports Medicine in 2003.

The theme ” Sports Medicine for health and fitness for all“
Hosted by the SLSMA under the auspices of Ministry of
Youth Affairs and Sports.
There were nearly 200 medical doctors who attended the
congress and successfully completed the FIMS-TPDC

• AFSM along with the FIMS Team Physician course in commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of FIMS.
• Consequently, Colombo was listed as one of seven Global Education Centers in Sports Medicine of FIMS

International Representation of SLSMA

• The Founder President of SLSMA, Dr. C.Thurairaja – Member of the
Education Commission of FIMS 1994 – 2002. Member of the FIMS
executive committee 2002 to 2010.
• SLSMA expanded its international involvement when another founder ExCo
member – Dr. Lalith Wijeyaratne was elected to the executive committee of
AFSM. Professor Vajira Dissanayake, Dr. Asela Ratnayake were also selected
to serve in the Education Commissionof AFSM, Dr. Aranjan Karunanayake in
the Anti-Doping Commission Dr. Nalinda Andraweera in the Liaison
Commission of AFSM and later Dr.Upul Madahpola in the AFSM Executive
Committee and Scientific Committee of FIMS.

SLSMA- Other Activities

• Sports Medicine Programmes in periphery ( Matara, Badulla,Kandy ,
Anuradhapura, Jaffna, etc.
• Seminars, workshop and offered medical services to Sports Clubs and
schools.
• Sports medical coverage for tournaments and events both locally and
internationally.
• Conducted key note lectures, seminars, research presentations, chairman
role, workshops in International Sports Medicine & sports Science
Conferences.
• Social events – Cricket encounters among sports medicine colleagues and
members of other medical specialities.

SLSMA- Since then…

• Since its dawn in 1992 SLSMA emerged as the professional organization
for Sports Medicine in Sri Lanka with both local and international integrity
and accreditation.
• The Association is a non-profit, non-commercial and non-political based
scientific organization of Sports Medicine in Sri Lanka, following the statute
of the International Federation of Sports Medicine and the principles of the
International Olympic Committee.
• SLSMA hopes to fulfill its aims and objectives in collaboration with local
and international professional bodies
