Sport and exercise medicine is the theoretical and practical aspect of medicine which investigates the influence of movement, training,sports, and lack of movement on normal and diseased persons of all ages and both sexes in order to apply the results for health promotion,preventive medicine, therapy, rehabilitation and promotion of athletic training.SEM is “a wide-ranging discipline” incorporating,
1. Prevention and management of musculoskeletal conditions associated with sport and exercise.
2. Management of the medical problems of exercising individuals at all ages and all levels of participation.
3. Exercise prescription for improving physical fitness, prevention & management of communicable and non-communicable diseases.
4. Catering exercise needs of special population groups such as the elderly, those with special needs, pregnant individuals, and children.
5. Providing expertise in the medical needs of sporting individuals,sporting teams, sporting events and sport governing bodies.
6. Providing expert opinion with drugs, supplements and doping in sport.
7. The promotion of healthy lifestyle and the prevention of disease or injury at a population level
8. Addressing sports nutrition, biomechanics, exercise physiology,pathophysiology, optimisation of human performance, sports rehabilitation, sports science, sports psychology, and ethical issues
9. Organize, and develop sports medicine-related courses with local and international collaboration for medical and allied health professionals. Education of the medical, paramedical, and public.
10. Research and Guideline development in SEM such as injury prevention, performance enhancement, understanding and improving impairment and enhancing the rehabilitation of injuries.
